Tungnath Trek - Part 1

We reached Chopta before it went dark. Our hotel was far away from the entrance of Tungnath trek. Because Chopta area comes under military there was no electricity and no network. This was to discourage illegal construction around the base of trek.

Details at the entrance of Tungnath trek

We should have stayed at Sari which was just one hour drive from Chopta. Sari has both electricity and network plus we didn’t have to change base. We decided to look for a stay near the entrance of Tungnath trek and found a modest accommodation. It allowed charging smartphones after 6PM with their solar powered electricity.

Cliffs on the way to Tungnath

We slept through the night and early morning we started for Tungnath. The trek is a concrete path for most of the route. It is steep but manageable. There are shortcuts that some trekkers were taking. It was sunny. We made quick progress in the first leg and only slowed down once the temple was visible.

Standing on one of the cliffs

There are jagged cliffs one one side of this last leg and smooth slope on the other side. I took a look from one of the cliffs and found it went disturbingly deep. There is no way someone will survive the fall. On the slope animals were grazing. This whole landscape was from another world.
