Cheung Chau, Hong Kong

Cheung Chau is a vacation within Hong Kong. The small island with polite residents and sandy beaches has an air of relaxation of Goa level. Only one hour from the busy Victoria Harbour, the island is an independent ecosystem and well commercialized. Ferries at regular interval from Pier 5 take you Cheung Chau - there are fast and slow ferries and option for first and second class.

Tung Wan Beach, Cheung Chau

First glance of Cheung Chau is a fishermen’s isle with lots of shops in front. This is just a facade. The best parts of this island is little far from the harbour. The one we went first to was directly ahead through the market with open pubs and cafes. We headed further to the end of road where an expansive golden beach was located. It was bright and sunny October weekend and we simply sat there for couple hours looking at the waves, the surfers and the city of Hong Kong in front.

Rock Carvings, Cheung Chau

There are ancient carvings on the rocks across the island. We went to the closest one which was on the right of this beach and found another beach secluded from the crowd and offering canoeing. There was a pub at an elevated place here where we settled. The sand here was grainy and somehow pleasing to walk on. It felt like foot massage by nature. We spent some more time here and then moved back to the market.

There was a religious procession going on which we overlooked while trying some local delicacies like frozen mango and crispy chips. While our plan before coming here was to cover the two ends, the laziness with which we had spent last few hours made it tough to venture to the other end famous for pirate’s bay and caves. We had to reach back to Hong Kong to see the sunset from the famous
