Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu

  • One of the most revered temples in the Indian subcontinent, Pashupatinath Temple and the evening celebration is a must visit in Kathmandu. It takes couple hours in total.
  • Evening is the best time to visit so that one covers the famous aarti on the banks of  Bagmati river. Photographs inside the temple are not allowed.

We had to visit Pashupatinath temple coming from India. As per Indian mythology when Sati died her body parts fell in different parts of Indian subcontinent but the most important part that is her head fell at Pashupatinath which makes this one of the most prominent religious sites around.

Entrance to Pashupatinath Temple, Kathmandu

We were not allowed to take any photographs inside the temple premises but the temple structure was similar to a lot of temples we had seen in Kathmandu only this one was much bigger. We took the auspicious clockwise round and returned to the main gate. A huge crowd was moving in the opposite direction so we followed.

Aarya Ghat, Pashupatinath Temple

We reached a bank which was stepped on both sides and a large crowd was already sitting on the stairs that were going down into a river. This was the famous Bagmati river which bisects Kathmandu. We found a place for ourselves quickly and settled. The aarti began in half an hour.

Aarti @ Aarya Ghat

The aarti was grand and noisy. There was some firework and a lot of chanting. The audience went into a trance. It went for an hour. We decided to quickly move towards the gates as the crowd started moving. There was already a jam at the entrance. We reached hotel via a cab. Next day we had to go little far to cover some more World Heritage Sites.
