A trip to Agra is not complete without visiting the capital of Mughal Empire during Emperor Akbar's reign - Fatehpur Sikri The drive to this small fort town is partly rough partly smooth.
Main Gate, Fatehpur Sikri |
A barrier at the entry through the fort walls to Fatehpur Sikri announced the ruins of a great construction ahead. We had to park our car half a mile away from the main structure - just like Taj. An auto was promptly called up and we were dropped at the foot of a giant door.
Side Gate, Fatehpur Sikri |
Climbing up the stairs in no time we were facing the famous Buland Darwaja. The compound within is expansive although bustling with typical Indian crowd. We walked around for half an hour and then decided to go round the area.
Side Road, Fatehpur Sikri |
At the back there was a ticket counter to a cascaded garden / terraced pond structure. It was much calmer and isolated and we sat in shadow for a while. There were intricate architecture made on red stone structures.

The last part was a garden beyond which a straight road lead back to the entry gates to this city. We took a walk on this road and after half a mile took a right turn in to jungle through which we came back to our parked car.
A tourism department hotel was nearby where we had our food before starting back for Delhi. We realized our mistake late when patch after patch of bad road tested our car before we met the Delhi Agra Highway - a good 50 miles that felt more like 100.
